Fences or gates which suffer storm damage will not be covered under home insurance, insurers have warned.

Households were told to secure tiling, fencing and gates in preparation for harsh weather conditions in order to avoid breakages.

A spokesperson for More Th>n insurers told the Daily Telegraph: “Fences, gates and movable property are not covered in the event of a storm.”

However she added that, under exceptional circumstances, claims would be reviewed on a case by case basis.

More Th>n have offered a number of hints and tips to their customers on the best way to prepare their houses. Homeowners are advised to lock away loose objects such as garden furniture and tools, secure all doors and windows, and keep a home insurance claim number close to hand in case of emergency.

The warnings come in the wake of particularly fierce weather conditions. Scotland experienced its worst weather in a decade this week, with winds reaching a top speed of 165mph. Around 70,000 homes were left without power by the storm.
