Excited onlookers have been peering through the security fencing to watch in awe as a huge crane removed the lock gates at a famous site in Bingley, West Yorkshire.

The town's Five Rise Locks is currently undergoing a makeover and the construction work has captured the imagination of local residents as they have turned out in their dozens to observe the ongoing removal work.

A 110-tonne machine arrived at the site on Tuesday (January 24th) morning with the gates taking an hour to prepare before being removed. The work is part of a £250,000 regeneration project for the iconic site and bosses have been overwhelmed by the public intrigue.

Peter Carter, construction supervisor for the project, told the Telegraph and Argus: "We have had people around all day watching what is happening and taking pictures. Normally we would shut the footbridge at the top of the lock flight where we had the crane but we managed to keep it open."

While there was much interest around the Bingley gate it was nothing compared to the opening of a play park in South Shields which the Shields Gazette said was unveiled "to much fanfare"
