Leeds could be home to a new shopping centre after a detailed application was submitted to Leeds City Council.
Hammerson wants to create the £130 million Victoria Gate scheme in the Yorkshire city after planning consent was granted in July 2011. The development will see the creation of a flagship John Lewis shop, 30 stores, restaurants and a multi-storey car park able to hold around 800 vehicles. Subject to approval, construction is due to begin in 2014 but officials are hopeful that Leeds City Council's Plans Panel will be given the go-ahead.
The Yorkshire city has only just recently seen the opening of the Trinity development which has provided the area with a high street shopping centre. It is home to a wealth of shops including Topshop, Apple and Hollister, among others, while there are a number of restaurants, bars and a cinema.
Victoria Gate will provide healthy competition for the new development and give shoppers in Leeds more choice when out and about on the high street. Plans and images of Victoria Gate were showcased to the public at a three-day exhibition in April 2013. Responses came back universally positive with many respondents stating that they were excited by the prospect of a John Lewis store coming to Leeds.
Joe Swindells, Victoria Gate's project director, said: "We're pleased to be submitting the detailed planning applications which, if determined, will be another key milestone towards getting construction underway. We are confident that we have developed the best possible scheme to help put Leeds on the map as one of the UK’s top retail destinations."
The creation of Victoria Gate will also provide a significant boost to employment in the area with around 6,000 jobs to be generated in the construction phase. Once the centre is opened there will be a further 1,500 retail and hospitality positions opened up, which is set to give the employment sector much needed stimulus while also launching a shopping development that will rival the likes of Manchester and London.
