Motorists in Bolton will face temporary traffic barriers on Corporation Street in a bid to prevent them cutting through from neighbouring roads.
Drivers have been found to be using the street next to the Market Place as a thoroughfare between Bridge Street and Knowsley Street, forcing the council to take action.
"People are currently using Corporation Street as a cut through and sometimes driving at high speeds," explained Stephen Young, assistant director for highways and business development.
He told This is Lancashire that the problem really came to a head last Christmas when some of the streets became blocked by delivery vans.
A campaign was recently launched for safety measures to be installed along Manor Road in Sheffield after a child was injured in the area last year.
Leasa Ward told BBC News that little has been done since her son's accident to prevent it happening to someone else.
