Residents of Wallbridge, Stroud, are celebrating after a decision was made to keep the traffic barriers up on a key route in the town.
Around 300 campaigners backed plans to keep a route through the centre of the town pedestrianised after it was installed to provide access for vehicles while work on the A46 Brewery Bridge, which was renamed in 2011 when the improvements began, was carried out.
While motorists believed that the temporary structure, installed by Gloucestershire County Council, was working, residents wanted to keep the area free from through traffic and the authority put the decision to a public consultation which was won by the campaigners.
Rachel Lyons, founder of Action Group Stroud Against Gyratory, told the Stroud News and Journal: "There is still a long way to go to ensure the area is pleasant and safe for all, including pedestrian friendly crossings and the removal of the barriers, which has been promised for over a year and has still not been done."
