Background
For dog boarding facilities, maintaining a peaceful environment is essential for both animal welfare and positive relationships with neighbouring properties. While barking is a natural behaviour for dogs, excessive noise can become a significant operational challenge, particularly when kennels are located near residential homes.
Gay Dog Boarding Kennels, a long established family run business in rural Hampshire, sought to address this challenge with the installation of specialist acoustic fencing. Operating since 1962 and holding a 5 star licence under the Animal Welfare Regulations 2018, the kennel is well known for providing high standards of care, comfort, and exercise for the dogs in its charge.
As part of its commitment to responsible animal care and good community relations, the business invested in a bespoke acoustic barrier solution designed to significantly reduce the transmission of barking noise towards nearby residential properties.
Challenge
As with any busy boarding kennel, barking is a natural part of daily activity. However, when sound carries beyond the site boundary, it can have an impact on nearby residents. For kennel operators, effective noise management is essential for maintaining positive community relationships and ensuring long term operational sustainability.
The owners wanted to take proactive steps to minimise the impact of barking noise on neighbouring homes while preserving the high standards of care and exercise that guests at the kennels enjoy. The solution needed to be robust, visually appropriate for the rural setting, and capable of delivering meaningful acoustic performance over a significant boundary length.
The owners of the dog kennels wanted a solution that would:
- Reduce the transmission of barking noise towards nearby homes.
- Help maintain a positive relationship with neighbouring residents.
- Support the long term sustainability of the business.
- Blend appropriately within the rural setting.
- Provide a robust and low maintenance boundary treatment.
Solution
The solution comprised of 36 metres of 2.5 metre high Jakoustic® Reflective acoustic fencing, installed on timber tuning fork posts with black steel spur supports, and an additional 4.8 metres of 2 metre high acoustic barriers.
The primary installation was strategically positioned along the boundary nearest to residential properties, creating a substantial acoustic screen between the kennels and neighbouring homes.
Acoustic barriers to reduce noise
Importantly, the acoustic fencing was installed with a very specific goal: reducing the impact of barking noise on neighbouring properties. While some acoustic barriers are often used to shield sites from external noise sources such as roads, railways, or industrial activity, this project focused on containing sound generated within the site itself. By reducing the escape of barking noise, the fencing helps create a more harmonious relationship between the kennel and the surrounding community. The solution supports the business's reputation as a responsible operator while helping preserve positive relationships with local residents.
Unlike standard fencing, acoustic barriers are specifically engineered to reduce the transmission of sound. The solid, gap-free construction helps prevent noise from passing directly through the fence line, and reduce sound energy generated by barking dogs. This results in a significant reduction in the amount of kennel noise travelling beyond the site boundary.
Aesthetics of acoustic barriers
The acoustic barrier system offered several additional advantages. The timber finish was an important aesthetic consideration. The soft, natural appearance of the timber helps the barrier integrate sympathetically into the rural landscape, avoiding the harsh visual impact that can sometimes be associated with industrial-style fencing. This allowed the kennels to maintain the welcoming, countryside character of the site that owners and visitors value.
Animal welfare benefits of acoustic barriers
There are also wider animal welfare benefits associated with acoustic barriers. Although not the primary objective in this particular project, acoustic fencing can help create a calmer environment by reducing external disturbances that may otherwise trigger barking or agitation. In kennel environments located near roads, industrial areas or other noisy surroundings, acoustic screening can contribute to a more peaceful atmosphere that may help reduce stress levels for animals.
Security benefits of acoustic barriers
Furthermore, while security was not a key driver for this installation, acoustic fencing can provide additional operational benefits for many kennel and cattery operators. Its solid construction creates a secure boundary with no gaps for animals to escape through, while the height and anti-climb characteristics can offer increased site security where required.
The completed installation successfully delivered a dedicated acoustic boundary between the kennel operation and neighbouring residential properties.
The project also highlights the value of acoustic fencing in modern kennel environments. As planning authorities and communities increasingly focus on environmental considerations, effective noise management measures can play a vital role in supporting compliant and sustainable operations.
For the kennels, the installation complements the high standards already associated with the business. As a family-run establishment with more than six decades of experience in caring for dogs, the addition of specialist acoustic barriers demonstrates an ongoing commitment not only to animal welfare, but also to being a considerate neighbour within the local community.
The acoustic barrier installation provides an effective means of managing barking noise along the site's most sensitive boundary. By reducing the impact of noise on neighbouring residential properties, the project supports a positive relationship with the local community while helping the kennel maintain the high standards of care and welfare for which it is known.
