Background
For more than six decades, The Half Moon in Putney has been a cornerstone of London's live music scene. Since 1963, the iconic venue has welcomed performers and music lovers alike, building a reputation as one of the capital's best loved grassroots music venues. Open seven days a week, the pub hosts live gigs throughout the year, attracting audiences from across London while remaining a valued part of the local community.
Located in the heart of Putney, The Half Moon sits within a largely residential area where homes are situated close to the venue. As with many successful live music pubs, balancing a vibrant entertainment offering with consideration for neighbouring properties is an important part of ongoing venue management. Alongside regular live performances, the pub also features an outdoor terrace area with a television screen for sporting events, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the week.
With activity taking place daily and often continuing into the evening, the venue required an effective acoustic solution to help reduce noise travelling towards nearby homes while maintaining the smooth operation of the business.
Challenge
As a busy live music venue, The Half Moon generates a variety of noise sources that extend beyond the performance space itself. While live music inside the pub is naturally a significant consideration, the rear service area also contributes to the overall acoustic environment.
The area behind the pub serves several essential operational functions. External doors open directly into this space and are frequently used by staff throughout the day and evening. Whenever these doors are opened during live performances, music and crowd noise can escape into the outdoor environment.
The rear area is also used for storing and handling a range of equipment and materials associated with running a busy pub. These include staff taking out empty kegs and casks for collection, refuse and recycling containers, bottle crates, and gas cylinders. While the gas cylinders themselves do not generate noise, deliveries and collections can involve metal containers being moved and handled, creating clanking and impact sounds.
Additional mechanical equipment located in the area includes two air conditioning units. Together, these sources contribute to background operational noise throughout the day and evening.
Activity within the service yard can be particularly noticeable during deliveries, waste collections, and routine venue operations. Given that the pub operates every day of the week and hosts regular evening events, minimising the potential impact on neighbouring residential properties was a key consideration.
The outdoor terrace also presented an additional challenge. Customers enjoying drinks, social gatherings, and televised sporting events are all activities which can contribute to the overall noise levels experienced outside the venue.
With residential properties located nearby, The Half Moon required a robust acoustic barrier capable of helping to contain and reduce noise from multiple sources, including live music escape, operational activity, and customer use of outdoor areas.
Solution
To help address these challenges, we supplied an 8 metre long Jakoustic Reflective Commercial and Highway acoustic barrier with galvanised steel I beam posts, to provide a durable and long lasting solution suitable for the demands of the commercial environment.
The acoustic barriers were positioned around the rear service area to create an effective physical barrier between operational noise sources and nearby residential properties. By screening the area where external doors open from the building, the barriers help reduce the direct transmission of sound whenever doors are used during live performances and busy trading periods.
The height of the barrier was particularly important given the range of sound sources present within the area. Noise produced by the air conditioning equipment as well as day to day pub operations, including waste handling, keg movements, and equipment servicing, can travel easily across open spaces if left unmitigated. The acoustic barrier helps to reduce the potential impact of continuous mechanical sound on neighbouring homes.
With a 25 year guarantee, the system offers the strength and resilience needed. The project demonstrates how acoustic barriers can play an important role in supporting long established hospitality venues operating within residential communities.
As a venue that has been hosting live music in Putney since 1963 and continues to welcome guests seven days a week, maintaining positive relationships with surrounding residents remains an important consideration. The provision of a high performance acoustic barrier system helps support this balance, allowing the venue to continue delivering memorable experiences while reducing the impact of noise on neighbouring properties.
In addition to its acoustic performance, the timber construction of the Jakoustic barrier provides an attractive, natural appearance that complements the character of the surrounding residential area. Unlike some alternative noise mitigation solutions, the timber finish helps the barrier blend seamlessly into its surroundings, reducing visual impact while still delivering effective noise reduction. This balance between functionality and aesthetics was an important consideration for a site located close to neighbouring homes, where maintaining the visual appeal of the local area is just as important as managing noise levels.
For pubs, bars, and live music venues located close to residential areas, acoustic barriers offer an effective solution for managing external noise sources and creating a more considerate environment for both businesses and local communities.
