Background
Mindenhurst is a thoughtfully planned new community in the village of Deepcut in Surrey, developed as part of a long term regeneration project led by a major housing developer. From the outset, the housebuilders placed strong emphasis on sustainability, outdoor living, and the creation of community spaces that would enrich everyday life for residents. . Generous green areas run throughout the estate, ensuring that families have ready access to nature alongside the convenience of modern new homes. Residents benefit from strong transport links, with nearby stations offering direct journeys to London as well as wider regional connections.
As more homes were completed by the housebuilder, the availability of high quality amenities became a priority. Among these is a new playground located opposite a nursery and a primary school, close to a church, and surrounded by newly built houses. This made the creation of a secure, visually appealing, and child friendly boundary, essential for both the housebuilder and the local community.
Just a few streets away, the village green park and play area already features our Timber Playtime® fencing, installed in previous phases of development by the same housebuilders. This existing installation has proven durable, safe and complementary to the green character of the estate. Its success influenced the housebuilder's decision to specify the same fencing for the new playground.
The playground sits within a wider greenspace, aligning perfectly with the sustainability priorities of the housebuilders at Mindenhurst, who aim to provide residents with access to safe, inclusive, and environmentally sensitive outdoor areas. With many families moving into the development and two schools directly nearby, the need for a well defined play area where children could play safely became a key focus for the housebuilders.
Challenge
The new playground needed to integrate seamlessly with its natural surroundings while offering robust safety measures. Its position close to a main road increased the need for a strong protective boundary, as the surrounding urban estate often carries busy traffic. The housebuilder required fencing that would create a clear perimeter and dissuade children from wandering off the site into potentially dangerous areas.
Alongside safety, the housebuilder sought a solution that would complement the soft landscaping and green character of Mindenhurst. Timber was the preferred choice because of its natural appearance and ability to blend with the local environment. The fencing also needed to offer longevity and low maintenance, reflecting the commitment to sustainable and durable design.
Compliance with playground safety standards was essential. The housebuilder needed assurance that all aspects of the fencing, from pale spacing to surface finish, would meet strict regulations to ensure the wellbeing of the children who would use the space daily.
Solution
To meet these requirements, Jacksons Fencing supplied 135 metres of Playtime® Timber fencing in a natural finish, along with two matching single leaf gates fitted with child-friendly self-closing gate latch systems. This created a secure and welcoming perimeter around the playground, offering peace of mind to the housebuilder, the local schools and the families who use the space.
Playtime® Timber fencing is specifically designed for playgrounds, nurseries, parks, and primary schools, making it an ideal choice for housebuilders who regularly have to incorporate these elements into their developments. The Playtime® fencing resembles a strengthened version of traditional picket or palisade fencing, providing both aesthetic appeal and robust performance. Its premium kiln dried, pressure treated timber comes with a 25 year guarantee against rot and insect attack, fulfilling housebuilders’ long term expectations for durability and protecting their reputation for quality and longevity.
Safety is built into every element of the system. Anti trap spacing prevents children getting limbs or necks caught between pales. Smooth planed timber, rounded edges, and secure stainless steel or galvanised fixings ensure that the fencing is safe to touch and resistant to damage. The pales are sandwiched between rails to deter vandalism, and double posts provide additional stability.
The fencing meets BS EN 1176 playground safety standards and is manufactured to RoSPA approved construction guidelines. These assurances aligned perfectly with the housebuilders’ safety requirements. The matching gates feature self closing and soft closing mechanisms with a secure locking option, and are built with galvanised metal frames powder coated in green RAL 6005 and clad in timber to match the fencing.
By installing Playtime® Timber fencing, the housebuilder successfully created a playground that is safe, attractive, and fully integrated with the green spaces surrounding it. The natural timber finish mirrors the fencing already used at the village green park and play area, achieving a consistent and cohesive appearance throughout the development.
