Background
Herne Bay Infant School, located on the Kent coast, is a vibrant and nurturing facility for children aged 4 to 7. With a strong emphasis on safety, wellbeing, and outdoor learning, the school continually invests in its facilities to ensure pupils can thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
As part of a wider site improvement initiative, the school identified the need to upgrade its perimeter and internal fencing. The existing boundaries no longer met the school’s safety standards or aesthetic expectations. At the front of the school, the fencing had become worn and no longer reflected the school’s welcoming appearance. The old railings, in place for decades, featured an outdated design with angled support posts that protruded into the ground. These posts created obstacles for cars in the car park and posed a trip hazard for pupils. In addition, the railings had begun to rust, and several pales were bent; both issues presented potential safety risks for pupils.
Internally, the fencing between playgrounds lacked the safety features required for young children, particularly in areas of high activity and transition.
The school’s leadership team sought a solution that would enhance security, support safeguarding protocols, and reflect the school’s identity. The fencing needed to be robust, low maintenance, and visually appealing, while meeting all relevant safety standards for educational environments.
Solution
Jacksons Fencing was appointed to deliver a tailored school fencing solution that would meet the school’s practical and aesthetic requirements. Our team worked closely with the school to install two complementary fencing systems, both powder coated in a bright, cheerful blue to match the school’s colour palette and create a cohesive look across the site.
Front Entrance: Barbican Imperial® Vertical Bar Fencing and Gates
After removing the existing metal railings at the front of the school, we installed our Barbican Imperial® vertical bar fencing, with matching vertical bar gates installed between the existing brick piers. This premium fencing system offers a sleek, contemporary appearance with strong vertical pales and concealed panel-to-post fixing. It’s designed to provide a secure boundary without feeling harsh or industrial; ideal for educational settings where first impressions matter.
The Barbican Imperial vertical bar fencing system is particularly well suited to school entrances. Its rigid construction and anti-climb design help deter unauthorised access, while the galvanised and powder coated finish ensures long-term durability and resistance to corrosion. The blue colour adds a friendly, welcoming tone to the school’s frontage, reinforcing its identity and making the entrance instantly recognisable to pupils and parents.
Matching gates were installed to provide secure access control, with smooth operation and reliable locking mechanisms that support the school’s safeguarding procedures. The installation between brick piers was carefully executed to preserve the architectural character of the site while delivering a modern upgrade.
Playground Areas: Anti-Trap Bow Top Fencing and Gates
Between the playgrounds, we installed Anti-Trap Bow Top fencing and gates, also finished in the same vibrant blue. This fencing style is a popular choice for primary schools and nurseries, offering a safe and friendly appearance with curved pale tops and spacing designed to prevent head and limb entrapment.
The Anti-Trap Bow Top system is fully compliant with RoSPA guidelines and BS EN 1176 standards for playground equipment, making it ideal for areas where children play, move, and interact. Its rounded design reduces the risk of injury, while the robust steel construction ensures long-term performance even in high traffic areas.
By installing this fencing between playground zones, the school can better manage pupil movement and supervision. It creates clear boundaries without obstructing visibility, allowing staff to monitor activity while maintaining a sense of openness and flow. Matching gates provide secure access between zones, supporting both safety and operational efficiency.
