Background
Christ’s Hospital School, located in the picturesque countryside of West Sussex, is an independent boarding and day school with a rich heritage and stunning architecture. The school’s grounds include historic buildings and a museum, creating an environment that blends tradition with modern functionality.
The school required fencing around a car park adjacent to the gym and sports centre, which is also accessible to members of the public. This area needed clear boundary definition without compromising the beauty of the surroundings.
Challenge
The key challenge was to deliver fencing that provided robust security and clear demarcation between the car park and the surrounding grounds, while harmonising with the historic character and aesthetic appeal of Christ’s Hospital. The car park sits near areas of grass and is overlooked by the museum and other attractive buildings. Any solution had to blend seamlessly into this environment without creating a harsh or intrusive barrier.
Even during school holidays, pupils remain on site, so safety during installation was paramount. The fencing also needed to reflect the school’s values and strategic priorities, which include sustainability and enhancing the overall experience for pupils and visitors.
Solution
Barbican Imperial vertical bar railings
One of our Approved Installers, RB Fencing, carried out this project. They installed our 1.8m high Barbican Imperial vertical bar railings with decorative ball finials. A total of 105 metres of fencing, powder coated black, was installed to create a sleek and decorative boundary.
Barbican Imperial vertical bar railings are renowned for their strength and durability, with our 25 year service life guarantee. The strong tubular construction ensures exceptional rigidity and resilience, making Barbican Imperial ideal for areas such as car parks. The addition of ball finials transformed the fencing into a feature that complements the school’s elegant architecture. Smooth, circular steel balls welded to the top of each pale provide a decorative flourish while enhancing safety for public spaces. Additionally, the secure welded pale-through-rail construction adds an extra layer of security, preventing tampering and ensuring long term stability.
Ball Top railings are also practical. Hidden tamper-proof connectors and fixings maintain a clean, seamless appearance and deter interference, essential for public areas. Each tubular pale is sealed with a spherical finial that acts as a ‘plug’, reducing crevices where dirt and cobwebs can gather. This makes the railings easier to clean and maintain, which is particularly important in school environments where cleanliness and upkeep are a priority.
The choice of vertical bar railings ensured the fencing does not obstruct views of the museum and surrounding buildings, preserving the visual harmony of the site. In addition, visibility is improved for security purposes. The black powder coated finish adds sophistication without drawing attention away from the school’s historic charm, creating an excellent first impression for visitors and prospective students.
Environmental considerations may also have influenced the decision. Vertical bar railings are far friendlier to wildlife than mesh alternatives. The gaps between the bars allow small animals, such as hedgehogs, to move freely, supporting biodiversity in the school’s green spaces. This reflects both Christ’s Hospital’s and our shared commitment to sustainability. Our manufacturing processes and long lasting products further align with the school’s aspiration to serve as a “green lung” for the community.
Given that pupils are present year round, safety during installation was a top priority. Our team worked efficiently and carefully to minimise disruption, ensuring the fencing was installed securely without compromising the daily activities of the school.
The completed project successfully delivered a secure, attractive, and environmentally sensitive solution. The vertical bar railings with ball finials provide clear boundary definition for the car park while enhancing the site’s aesthetics. Their durability and low maintenance design ensure long term value, aligning with the school’s strategic goals for infrastructure and sustainability. By choosing Jacksons Fencing, Christ’s Hospital School invested in a solution that not only meets immediate security requirements but also aligns with its long term sustainability goals and commitment to enhancing the local environment.
