Background

A technology company based in Central London required an upgrade to its perimeter security. Focused on the automotive and EV sector, with applications in mobile phones, power tools, and drones, the company operates in a high value, high risk environment where intellectual property and advanced components must be carefully protected.

Located within a densely populated residential area in London, the site needed to balance robust protection with a clean, unobtrusive appearance. Although steel bollards were already installed to deter vehicle impact, the existing perimeter setup lacked a cohesive secure fencing solution and effective access control system.

Challenge

The primary challenge was to deliver a secure fencing solution that significantly improved site security without disrupting the surrounding residential environment. The existing steel barriers and outdated swing gate offered limited protection and failed to meet the client’s evolving operational and security needs.

Additionally, the system needed to integrate with the existing bollards, provide controlled access for both pedestrians and vehicles, and offer long term durability with minimal maintenance.

Solution

To address these challenges, we implemented a comprehensive secure fencing system tailored to the site’s layout, operational requirements, and urban setting.

The project began with the safe removal of the existing steel barriers and outdated swing gate. This cleared the way for a modernised perimeter that could deliver improved performance, functionality, and aesthetics.

Installation of Barbican® Secure Fencing

We supplied and installed approximately 44 metres of 2 metre high Barbican® vertical bar security fencing, finished in a durable black powder coating. This finish was chosen not only for its durability but also to align with the client’s brand identity, as black is a core brand colour, allowing it to blend into the surrounding environment.

The fencing was installed with posts set and concreted into the ground at 3 metre centres, ensuring maximum stability and strength across the entire boundary. The new secure fencing was positioned just inside the existing steel bollards.

Barbican® fencing was selected due to its advanced construction and proven security performance. Its welded pale through rail design removes the need for bolts, meaning there are no components that can be easily tampered with or removed. The horizontal rails are sleeved onto upright posts, creating a seamless and exceptionally strong structure that enhances both durability and appearance.

Security is further strengthened through its anti climb design, which acts as a strong visual and physical deterrent to intruders. In addition, the vertical pale spacing complies with building regulations for anti trap safety, making it suitable for public facing boundaries.

With a 25 year service life guarantee, the Barbican® vertical bar fencing system provides long term value, reducing the need for frequent maintenance or replacement, an important consideration for a busy London site.

Pedestrian Access Gates

To manage staff access safely and efficiently, we installed two 1 metre wide single leaf swing gates on different sides of the site. These gates provide controlled pedestrian entry and exit points, opening to 90 degrees for ease of movement while maintaining a secure boundary when closed.

Integrated directly into the secure fencing line, these gates ensure that all access points remain consistent in both design and security performance.

Vehicular Access Gate

For vehicle entry, we installed a 6 metre wide double leaf swing gate, designed to accommodate operational traffic without compromising site security.

This automated gate is equipped with a UKCA marked system, ensuring compliance with the latest safety standards. The inclusion of rear mounted rams enhances both the reliability and security of the gate mechanism, reducing exposure to tampering while providing smooth and controlled operation.

The result is a robust vehicular access solution that aligns with the overall secure fencing system, maintaining a high level of protection across all entry points.

Integrated Security Approach

A key strength of this project was how the new installation worked alongside the existing site features. By positioning the secure fencing just inside the steel bollards, we were able to enhance the overall perimeter without removing elements already in place.

This approach ensures that the secure fencing creates a continuous boundary that prevents unauthorised pedestrian access while the gates allow controlled, secure entry for staff, visitors, and vehicles.

Together, these elements create a well rounded perimeter solution, extending protection beyond vehicle deterrence to include full site security and access control. This aligns with integrated security principles, such as the 5Ds of perimeter security

Aesthetic Considerations

Given the site’s location among residential buildings, it was essential that the security upgrade did not appear overly industrial or intrusive. The black powder coated finish, clean lines of the Barbican® fencing, and seamless construction all contribute to a professional, understated appearance.

This ensures that the new fencing solution enhances security without negatively impacting the surrounding streetscape.

Outcome

The completed installation delivers a robust, reliable, and visually appropriate secure fencing solution for a high tech business operating in a challenging urban environment.
The client now benefits from a continuous and highly secure perimeter, with improved control over both pedestrian and vehicular access. The upgraded system provides enhanced deterrence against intrusion and tampering, while offering long-term durability backed by a 25 year guarantee, all seamlessly integrated with the existing infrastructure.

Ultimately, this project demonstrates how a well designed, secure fencing system can transform site security, protecting valuable assets and operations while remaining sensitive to its surroundings.
