Luminous Oak Academy is a purpose built special education school in Hampshire, designed to provide education and support for up to 125 children aged 8-16 with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. As a specialist provision, the academy has been developed with a strong focus on creating an environment that supports pupils' emotional wellbeing, learning, and personal development both inside and outside the classroom.

For any school, the design of outdoor spaces is just as important as internal learning environments. Playgrounds, sports areas and recreational spaces provide valuable opportunities for exercise, exercise, social connection, and building confidence. However, these spaces must also be carefully planned to minimise unnecessary distractions and sensory triggers that could negatively affect some pupils with SEMH needs.

Located close to a main road and a housing development, the school required a solution that would help create calm, safe and secure outdoor environments while reducing the impact of external noise. Challenge

The academy is located close to a main road and housing development, meaning external noise had the potential to impact the quality of its outdoor spaces.
