Background
Holt Parish Council play park, located in the county of Wiltshire in the South West of England was in desperate need of new fencing. The existing chain link fencing was in a poor condition; rusty with lots of sharp edges, and poorly maintained gates which had fallen into disrepair.
The key functions of playground fencing and gates are to contain children within the relative safety of the play area whilst keeping dogs out of the play area and giving children a sense that it is their area; separate from the surroundings.
In reality, a playground fence should be specified and built to withstand much more if the fence is to stand the test of time. Often, older children will climb the fence rather than using gates, and play parks are often a common target for vandalism. So when a playground fence is specified, it should be able to withstand climbing, have a safe design in case younger children come in to contact with it, and should be designed to withstand vandalism.
The previous chain link fencing had fallen victim to climbing/vandalism and this reduced the life of the fence, making it unsafe and unfit for purpose.
New fencing and gates were therefore needed to replace the deteriorating and dangerous chain link that had resulted in the playground becoming an unsafe and unwelcoming environment for the children using the play equipment. The required fencing would need to provide a safe and welcoming perimeter around the play park with suitable access for pedestrians as well as vehicular access for maintenance and emergency vehicles
Solution
1st Aid 4 Fencing, one of Jacksons’ Approved Installers, installed approximately 106m of 1.2m high Anti Trap Bow Top fencing around the play park, powder coated green to provide a glossy, long-lasting finish. Where a metal playground fencing solution is desired, Anti-Trap Bow Top fencing is one of the best if not the best type of fencing for playgrounds and play areas, it comes in four standard heights and features wider gaps between the hoops to prevent children getting their heads and limbs stick between the pales.
Our Anti Trap Bow Top fencing is a ROSPA approved fence that conforms to anti-trap regulations and BS EN 1176 playground standard. The tubular pale-through-rail design provides strong construction and easy installation when compared to traditional iron railings. The panels are attached to posts with concealed vandal proof connectors, protecting the fence from vandalism which is unfortunately common around playgrounds. The colour of the fence is also customisable with standard colours being Black RAL 9005 and Green RAL 6005; with a wide range of powder coated colours on request. We also supply marine coating for applications near the coast, so you can easily match new fencing to existing branding and colours.
A 3.0m wide field gate was installed for authorised vehicular access as well as three self-closing pedestrian Anti Trap Bow Top gates for ease of entry and to keep the play area secure, all powder coated the same to match the fencing.
With a 25-year guarantee, the fencing represents a great investment for Holt Parish Council as minimal if any maintenance will be needed, and the long guarantee makes this highly cost effective. The local community and children will be able to safely enjoy the play park for years to come and allocate budget to activities and events.
