Background

London’s first public park, Finsbury Circus Gardens, reopened in summer 2025 after a major transformation led by the City of London Corporation. This Grade II-listed site, the largest open green space in the Square Mile, has been a tranquil retreat since the 1600s. The recent upgrades focused on accessibility, biodiversity, and sustainability, introducing 12 new tree species, over 13,000 plants, and 6,000 bulbs to attract wildlife and enhance climate resilience. The revitalised park now offers improved seating, a larger central lawn, and landscaping designed to create habitats for birds, bees, and bats.

As part of this ambitious project, a secure yet aesthetically pleasing enclosure for garden maintenance and waste storage was required. This enclosure needed to provide robust security for equipment and waste management while blending seamlessly into the park’s natural surroundings, ensuring the welcoming atmosphere was preserved.

Challenge

The primary challenge for this public park fencing installation was to design and implement an enclosure that met multiple objectives:

  • Security and privacy: The enclosure needed to protect maintenance equipment and waste from unauthorised access and conceal these functional areas from public view.
  • Aesthetic integration: The park’s historic character and biodiversity-focused landscaping demanded a solution that complemented its natural beauty. Harsh industrial designs would have disrupted the tranquil environment.
  • Wildlife considerations: The timber pales reduce any chance of hedgehogs or foxes getting caught in the mesh.
  • Adaptability to curved pathways: The enclosure had to follow the park’s curved pathways perfectly, ensuring a natural flow without gaps or awkward angles.
  • Longevity and sustainability: Durability and low maintenance were essential, with a long term guarantee to support the city of London corporation’s investment in green spaces.

Solution

To meet these challenges, we supplied and installed approximately 27.5 metres of 2.4 metre high EuroGuard® Combi fencing to create a large, secure enclosure, along with a double-leaf manual swing gate for controlled access. This solution delivered the perfect balance of security, aesthetics, and sustainability for the park.

Key features of this fencing for a public park

  • Strength and beauty combined: One of the standout aspects of this public park fencing installation was how well the enclosure blended with its surroundings. EuroGuard® Combi merges robust welded mesh panels with Jakcure® treated timber slats, offering proven security with natural warmth. The timber finish harmonises with the park’s trees and landscaping, creating an enclosure that is secure but not intimidating.
  • Privacy and anti-climb design: Closely spaced timber slats provide privacy while concealing the mesh apertures, preventing hand or footholds. Unique vandal proof panel-to-post fixings further enhance security.
  • Durability: Both timber and steel components are guaranteed for 25 years. Our Jakcure® treated timber undergoes an intensive process that protects against rot and insect attack, ensuring longevity in outdoor conditions.

Bespoke gate design for the public park

The enclosure included a specially designed gate to meet the park’s unique requirements. It features unequal double leaves, creating a three metre wide opening with one leaf measuring two metres and the other one metre wide. This design allows flexible access for maintenance vehicles and staff, making day-to-day operations easier.
To add more practicality, the gate was built with dual opening capability, meaning it can swing either inward or outward up to 90 degrees. This flexibility ensures the gate works perfectly in the park’s layout, no matter the situation.
The gate also has a keylocking system and drop bolts, providing peace of mind that the enclosure remains secure when not in use.

Installation highlights

One of the standout aspects of this public park fencing project was how well the enclosure blended with its surroundings. It followed the park’s curved pathway perfectly, creating a natural flow that feels intentional and harmonious. The use of galvanised steel mesh and posts ensures long lasting corrosion resistance, while the timber elements add warmth and complement the greenery. The overall look is secure yet welcoming, rather than harsh or industrial. Instead, the design feels elegant and well-integrated with the park’s natural character and biodiversity goals. It’s a practical solution that doesn’t compromise on aesthetics.

Building a secure enclosure

Creating a secure outdoor storage area is vital for protecting maintenance equipment, waste, and other sensitive items. We provide a variety of options for secure storage including various mesh security fences, vertical bar railings, and bespoke compounds designed to meet specific site requirements. All solutions are available in a galvanised finish, with optional powder coating to add colour and increased protection.

Secure outdoor storage is not only about preventing theft; it also helps keep animals out of vulnerable areas and ensures children cannot access potentially hazardous materials. For applications that require protection against forced entry, we recommend solutions that meet Loss Prevention Standards and Secured by Design guidelines.
Practical considerations include avoiding locations near climbing aids such as trees or lamp posts, using anti-climb fencing, and ensuring all fixings are tamper resistant. For sites where privacy and aesthetics matter, our EuroGuard® Combi is ideal, combining timber slats with welded mesh panels for a secure, attractive enclosure, making it a perfect choice for public park fencing projects where security and visual appeal are equally important.
