Background
Merriman Grange is an award winning care home located in the vibrant seaside town of Worthing, West Sussex. Recognised as the number one care home in Worthing and the surrounding area, and among the top twenty in the South East, Merriman Grange provides exceptional residential, nursing, dementia, and respite care. The development combines award winning care with beautifully designed interiors, outstanding facilities, and a welcoming environment that promotes comfort, independence, and wellbeing.
One of the most valued features of the care home is its thoughtfully landscaped gardens. Designed to support both physical and mental wellbeing, the outdoor spaces include accessible pathways suitable for walking frames and wheelchairs, attractive planting schemes, tranquil seating areas, and opportunities for residents to take part in gardening activities. The gardens also host a variety of outdoor events and social activities, making them an important extension of the home's living environment. Given the importance of creating peaceful indoor and outdoor spaces for residents, effective acoustic barriers formed a key part of the site's boundary design.
Challenge
The site faces several environmental challenges that had the potential to impact resident comfort.
The most significant issue was a long boundary running alongside a busy main road with a 40mph speed limit. Constant traffic movement can generate persistent background noise, particularly for properties located close to the carriageway. For a care home environment, where residents may be especially sensitive to external disturbances, reducing road noise was a crucial consideration. A number of bedrooms face towards this road, making high performance acoustic barriers particularly important for helping to create quieter, more relaxing spaces for residents. Not only was the noise reduction potential important to consider during specification, but with windows facing the barrier, its visual appeal was also a key influence.
In addition to the roadside boundary, sections of the care home's landscaped gardens also required acoustic barriers. These outdoor spaces are designed as peaceful areas where residents can enjoy fresh air, socialising, and activities. Maintaining a calm atmosphere within these gardens was essential to preserving the tranquil environment that contributes to residents' overall wellbeing.
A third area requiring attention was an outdoor seating space positioned near neighbouring properties and the site's car park. While this area also experienced some residual traffic noise from the nearby road, privacy was an equally important factor. Residents using the seating area needed a comfortable, enclosed environment where they could relax without feeling overlooked.
Solution
To help address these requirements, a comprehensive acoustic barriers solution was supplied for use across multiple areas of the site.
The primary element consisted of 163 metres of 1.8m high and 32 metres of 2.2m high Jakoustic Reflective acoustic barriers mounted on our special timber tuning fork posts. Installed along the boundary adjacent to the busy main road, these acoustic barriers provide a solid noise reducing screen between traffic and the care home grounds. The substantial continuous run creates an effective boundary that helps limit the transmission of road noise towards both the gardens and resident accommodation.
There was also a strong emphasis on aesthetics from the outside. Merriman Grange sits within an area known for its traditional Sussex architecture, with characteristic flint walls and stone pebble features reflecting the local coastal landscape. By positioning attractive timber roadside acoustic barriers behind these existing boundary walls, the project was able to achieve effective noise reduction while preserving the established character of the site. This approach ensured the acoustic barriers work harmoniously with the local architectural character rather than detracting from it.
Further acoustic barriers were supplied for use within the garden areas. In these sections, the barriers were painted black to complement the contemporary colour scheme of the care home.
The project also included a 1m wide acoustic gate, complete with 125mm x 125mm timber posts and fitted with a secure J-Lock. This formed part of the acoustic boundary surrounding the outdoor seating area, helping to maintain a consistent appearance while ensuring practical access.
Beyond their acoustic benefits, the solid acoustic barriers also deliver valuable privacy advantages. Residents can enjoy the gardens, outdoor seating spaces and activity areas with an increased sense of comfort and security, shielded from views from neighbouring properties, passing vehicles and public areas.
The acoustic barriers provide a cohesive solution that successfully combines noise reduction, privacy, and visual appeal throughout the site. By supplying acoustic barriers across multiple sections of the site, including roadside boundaries, landscaped gardens, and dedicated seating areas, the project supports Merriman Grange's commitment to providing a peaceful, comfortable environment for residents.
The acoustic barriers contribute to a setting where residents can enjoy quieter bedrooms, relaxing garden spaces, and private outdoor areas. The acoustic fencing solution plays an important role in supporting wellbeing, comfort, and enjoyment throughout the development, demonstrating how carefully selected acoustic barriers can enhance both the functionality and appearance of modern care environments.
