Background

When it comes to creating a safe and welcoming environment for pupils, effective perimeter protection is essential. Callis Grange Nursery and Infant School in Broadstairs, Kent has trusted us as their school fencing contractor for more than two decades, demonstrating the long-term quality and reliability of our products and services.

Our relationship with Callis Grange began in 2004 when the school required a fencing solution that would provide safe demarcation around separate areas within the school grounds, whilst maintaining an attractive and child-friendly appearance. Having carefully assessed the school's requirements, we supplied 1.2m high anti-trap bow top railings around key areas of the site.

The project was designed with pupil safety as the primary consideration. Bow top fencing is widely recognised as one of the most suitable forms of school fencing due to its smooth, rounded design and lack of sharp edges. The anti-trap version helps to reduce the risk of children's heads or limbs becoming trapped, making it particularly suitable for nursery and infant school environments.

More than two decades later those original railings, and Barbican® entrance and rear access gates and perimeter fencing, installed in 2007, remain in place and continue to serve the school effectively; a testament to the quality of the materials and coatings used.

Challenge

As with many growing schools, Callis Grange required additional improvements to its perimeter security and access control over time. While the original fencing continued to perform well, the school sought further enhancements that would strengthen security, improve site management, and complement the appearance of the existing perimeter fencing. Part of the original 1.2m high fencing required replacing with taller, 1.8m high fencing and a new double leaf gate, to improve safeguarding around the playground.

The school required a fencing solution capable of withstanding the challenges associated with a modern educational environment. Daily use by hundreds of pupils, exposure to the coastal Kent weather, and the demands of long-term durability all needed to be carefully considered during the design and installation process.

The new elements needed to blend seamlessly with the existing fencing infrastructure already installed on site. A mismatch in design or colour could have resulted in an inconsistent appearance across the school grounds. Therefore, maintaining a cohesive and professional aesthetic was just as important as achieving the required security objectives.

Solution

Building on our successful partnership with the school, we were appointed to manufacture, supply, and install additional school fencing and access control solutions.

A key element of the project was the installation of 46 metres of 1.8m high anti-trap bow top railings and a matching double leaf gate, providing upgraded security while maintaining the child-friendly appearance for which bow top systems are renowned.

The railings were manufactured using high-quality steel at our Kent workshop and finished with a durable green powder coated finish, carefully selected to match the existing fencing installed on site. This ensured visual consistency throughout the school grounds and provided excellent protection against corrosion and weathering.

As experienced school fencing contractors, we understand the importance of balancing safety, security and aesthetics. The anti-trap bow top design provided a robust physical barrier while maintaining visibility across the site, allowing staff to monitor movement and activity effectively.

Results

The success of this long-term project can be measured not only by the immediate improvements delivered to the school but also by the continued performance of the fencing and gate systems years later.

The original 1.2m high anti-trap bow top railings installed in 2004 have now been protecting pupils and staff for approximately 22 years. Despite continuous use and exposure to the elements, they remain a valuable part of the school's perimeter security infrastructure.

Similarly, the entrance gate and rear perimeter fencing and access gate installed in 2007 continue to provide secure access to the site and stand as a visible example of long-lasting, high quality workmanship.

The replacement of shorter height railings with 46 metres of 1.8m high anti-trap bow top railings strengthened the safety of the school while maintaining a consistent appearance throughout the campus. The new fencing arrangement allows school staff to view the car park and anyone who has entered the school grounds, while preventing further access until the gate is opened remotely. This is an effective safeguarding measure, as it enables staff to assess visitors before granting access to the main school site. In addition, it keeps children safe and secure by preventing direct access to the car park and entrance gate area. The green powder coated finish ensured the new fencing integrated seamlessly with the existing installation, creating a unified and professional look.

By choosing a trusted school fencing contractor with extensive experience in educational environments, Callis Grange was able to achieve a fencing solution that balanced pupil safety, site security and long-term value.
