Oak security bollards are helping to calm traffic outside a school in Hampshire.

Pupils, parents and staff have all praised the development at Compton school, the Hampshire Chronicle reports.

Some residents were critical when the idea was proposed earlier this year, fearing the measures would cause bottlenecks.

However, the newspaper reported that parents feel it is now safer to cross the street after the introduction of the security bollards.

"The new layout now prevents cars from overtaking at the crossing point, which is what had been happening and causing near misses with children and parents, and will now reduce the risk of accidents with pedestrians," resident Julia Mitchell told the newspaper.

She also said that far from being an eyesore, the security bollards, are "a very attractive, in keeping, wooden structure".

Earlier this month security bollards were installed in Lincoln to stop motorists exploiting a short cut.
