A Shropshire man has adopted some extra measures to ensure his monster 70 pound cabbage is protected – by erecting security fencing to stop the colossal veg being attacked by insects.

Graham Tranter, from Bridgnorth, planted the cabbage eight months ago by using a secret mixture.

Three feet tall and five feet wide, it is some 50 times heavier than the average cabbage, and big enough to serve up around 300 servings of soup.

However, producing such a gargantuan veg can only be done putting the work in, Mr Tranter warned.

"You have to do a lot of work on them to get them to that size, but I took care of it and put a fence around to keep the insects away, and the results were pretty good," the grower said.

He added that he expected it to be "very tasty", and was adamant it wouldn't go to waste.

"I'll just have to find myself a lot of friends and family to share it all with," he said.ADNFCR-3337-ID-800119064-ADNFCR
