Arsonists have targeted a school play area in Breightmet, Bolton, destroying a children's climbing frame.

The Bolton News reported that fire crews spent 45 minutes tackling the blaze at St Catherine's Academy Primary School which occurred when the arsonists breached the play area fencing and set fire to some of the equipment.

The perpetrators left the site in ruin after most of the play facilities were badly damaged in the fire and now have been deemed unusable. Pupils and staff are currently away on their Easter holidays and John Duffin, watch manager at Bolton North Fire Station condemned the actions of those responsible.

Councillor Lynda Byrne, told the source: "I am just shocked. The children are all due to move into the new school quite soon. It is a shame, the children there will need somewhere to play before the move."

St Catherine's is in the process of putting the final touches to the new academy which started being built in April 2011.
