Rushpark, Newtonabbey, is set to see security fencing put up as the council has submitted a planning application for a new play area.

The authority had recently pulled down a similar facility in the town which was met with dismay from residents but now the community has been appeased as the council plans to install a new play park.

Whilst the area will not be in the original spot of the other facility, it will still be in close proximity to nearby houses.

Newtownabbey Mayor Billy Webb said: "The planning service is going to fast track the planning application for the new play area and we plan to move very quickly, with the tender for the play area being advertised next week."

The site which the play area once stood was sold by the area's authority to the Apex Housing Association, but now a secondary site has been approved and it is hoped work will begin soon.
