Balfour/Kier to build military technical training base at RAF Lyneham

Balfour/Kier to build military technical training base at RAF Lyneham
RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire is set to be home to a new military technical training base following the award of a multi-million pound contract.

Balfour Beatty and Kier have won the agreement, worth £121 million, and managed to beat off competition from Skanska to secure it. As part of a joint venture the companies will be responsible for redeveloping the RAF base and allow the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to convert it for a different use.

The government department is looking to close the existing facility at the end of the year to allow for the work to take place. Once completed, the MoD wants to create a major engineering training campus to train the next batch of recruits in maintaining military equipment. Under the Defence Infrastructure Organisation's construction programme, work is expected to begin in early 2014.

Balfour and Kier will be responsible for demolishing the existing building and then carrying out essential infrastructure work. Around 53,000 sq m of new buildings and the refurbishment of 73,000 sq m of current facilities will be carried out during the work. A completion date has been earmarked for 2015.

Commodore David Elford, commandant of the Defence College of Technical Training, said: “This is the first stage of the development of the Defence College of Technical Training at Lyneham, which will provide a home for the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers when they move from Arborfield and Bordon in 2015."

Wiltshire Council approved the plans in October but the MoD faced opposition as the plans included the demolition of the base's Chapel of Rest. A petition, with around 6,000 signatures, was lodged but the government department reassured the public that there would still be the inclusion of a garden of remembrance to compensate for the loss of the chapel.
