Balfour Beatty secures new London hotel contract

Balfour Beatty secures new London hotel contract
Balfour Beatty has been awarded a contract to construct a new hotel in London for Grove Developments Limited.

The £121 million agreement will see an 18-storey hotel, leisure and apartment complex built in North Greenwich Peninsula. Officials explained that designs have already been laid out for 452 rooms to be constructed, complete with leisure and conference facilities and even VIP access to the nearby O2 Arena. Along with the hotel complex there will be a further 100 serviced apartments incorporated in the plans.

North Greenwich is the focus of major regeneration work and plans are already afoot for a number of key projects. Around 3.5 million sq ft of commercial space is set to be created with a predicted 24,000 jobs created in the process. It will also feature a number of innovative transport option aside from the normal bus, tube or car. Plans unveiled highlighted the use of river taxi on the Thames while London's first urban cable car, Emirates Air Line, will be introduced.

Balfour Beatty's latest venture will be an important part of the redevelopment and will provide accommodation for visitors coming to the area to watch a show at the O2 Arena. With the venue playing host to a number of stellar names in the world of music and entertainment it will no doubt be inundated with fans.

Work on the hotel is expected to begin this summer with officials earmarking summer 2015 as a completion date. All the aspects of the development will be built to the BREEAM 'Excellent' rating while green design features such as photovoltaic panels and rainwater harvesting will help to reduce the building's energy consumption.

Andrew McNaughton, Balfour Beatty chief executive officer, said: “We are delighted to see that our customers are eager to embrace sustainable best practice to develop a scheme that will help promote UK trade and investment, and welcome the opportunity to apply the sustainable construction methods we have been developing as part of our complex building offering.”
