Two Scottish brewers have received funding to relocate their operations back to home soil as part of a new initiative by the country's government.
Both Glasgow-based Heidi Beers and Aberdeenshire firm BrewDog currently have their main brewing hubs in Germany and Belgium respectively, but will now receive a share of £2.4 million to relocate back to Scotland.
The move is the latest round of investment from the Scottish government's 'Food Processing, Marketing and Cooperation' (FPMC) scheme, which aims to support the country's companies that operate in this successful industry.
Ministers revealed that 32 firms had been given grants totalling £9 million, meaning that since 2008 the government has provided £38 million to support 159 food and drink projects within the country. Both Heidi Beers and BrewDog have been performing strongly within both the domestic and international markets with the latter going from strength to strength.
Officials at Heidi stated that the £1.85 million grant will go towards the expansion of its current confines, helping to support 18 new jobs and move all of its operations to Scotland.
BrewDog also announced that it will use its grant of £551,000 to go towards its Ellon brewery, which is currently in construction. It will also relocate production plants in England and Belgium to Scotland as well as creating 16 new positions.
James Watt, BrewDog Plc co-founder said: "The grant award has ensured that our state of the art eco-brewery is being built in Aberdeenshire. The new brewery will increase our production capacity ten fold and give us the capacity to keep up with the overwhelming demand for our beers and continue to grow our business."
The Aberdeenshire firm is quickly becoming one of the most well-known craft beer makers as it continues to expand its brand. The company has opened a number of bars in Scotland and England and recently announced that it is in the process of building pubs in Birmingham, Bristol and a second outlet in London's Shoreditch area. BrewDog also won its appeal against a licence refusal for a bar in Leeds and will open the new establishments in the coming months taking its total up to 11.
