Glasgow Hydro still on track despite fire

Glasgow Hydro still on track despite fire
Contractors at Glasgow's newest exhibition venue, The Hydro, are hopeful that the facility will be opened on time despite a recent fire.

The £125 million centre was besieged by flames and black smoke when a fire broke out in the roof during construction on June 8th. Fire crews were called to the scene and it took 40 firefighters to bring the blaze under control. It had been thought that the incident could potentially affect the opening date of The Hydro but officials and contractor Lend Lease believe that it could still be ready for the inaugural event.

Glasgow-native Rod Stewart is set to be the first artist to perform in the new state-of-the-art building on September 30th. The likes of Fleetwood Mac, Bruno Mars, The Proclaimers, Jessie J, Peter Gabriel and Queens Of The Stone Age are among the raft of other acts that have been announced to play the venue over October and November.

A statement from the venue quelled fears that it would not be opened as planned and read: "While the damage is not as severe as first feared, there remains a number of areas, especially around the roof, that could still impact on the construction programme for completing The Hydro in time for the opening period."

Once completed, The Hydro will become the largest purpose-built indoor arena in Scotland with a capacity of 12,000 rising to 13,000 when standing is taken into account. It will act as the nation's flagship venue with organisers hoping to attract some of the world's biggest superstars to Glasgow.

It sits next to the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre as well as the Clyde Auditorium creating a cultural square for Glaswegians and visitors coming to watch a concert or other performance.

The Hydro is also set to play host to a number of Commonwealth Games events when the prestigious competition is held in Glasgow in 2014. Organisers are hoping for similar success as London and Manchester experienced with the 2012 Olympics and 2002 Commonwealth Games respectively.
