Job creation at industrial vehicle manufacturer JCB is set for an increase thanks to a significant investment programme.
The company announced that it would be spending £150 million to expand its business which, in turn, will create 2,500 new jobs. JCB is planning to close its Rugeley factory and build a new one in Uttoxeter, there are also proposals for an excavator manufacturing plant in Cheadle. The changes were outlined in a five-year investment plan delivered to current employees and ahead of a visit from chancellor George Osborne on Friday (December 6th).
Officials unveiled extra details of the plan which includes an expansion of production operations in Rocester with the company adding 126,000 sq ft of manufacturing space to increase hydraulic cylinder production. The Cheadle premises will be purpose built and spread over 220,000 sq ft the move is designed to allow the expansion of JCB Earthmovers and JCB Compact Products. The company is also aiming to relocate JCB Utility Products to a smaller factory elsewhere in the area.
JCB is set to benefit from the National Infrastructure Plan which was recently outlined by chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander. The minister announced a £375 billion investment package along with extra funding from six major insurance companies which gives a significant shot in the arm to the construction sector. One of the projects outlined in the announcement was a major road improvement on the A50 through Uttoxeter.
The industrial vehicle manufacturer is set to benefit from this development and Mr Osborne will congratulate JCB on selling its one millionth model during the year.
JCB chairman, Lord Bamford said: "The chancellor's announcement of the major A50 road improvement project is good news for businesses in this area. It allows companies like JCB to plan ahead with confidence, knowing that the road network will not constrain business growth and future investment."
