Morgan Sindall signs up to UK's first carbon neutral lab

Morgan Sindall signs up to UK's first carbon neutral lab
Morgan Sindall has been selected as the main contractor for the UK's first-ever carbon neutral laboratory.

The company will work alongside project manager Gleeds, which have been appointed by the University of Nottingham to bring the development to life. Morgan Sindall stated that the construction contract is worth £15.8 million and the entire site will span 4,500 sq m once work begins in the autumn.

Architects Fairhursts, quantity surveyors Northcroft, engineers Aecom and CDM consultants WDP are also involved in the creation of the GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory of Sustainable Chemistry. Developers aim for the site to provide chemistry laboratory facilities for 100 researchers and is receiving funds from GlaxoSmithKline to ensure that the construction process is  reached on time and within budget.

The University of Nottingham wants to ensure that instrument rooms, a teaching lab and space for hosting outreach activities are all incorporated. Morgan Sindall stated that it is committed to ensuring that the building achieves a BREEAM Outstanding rating and will become carbon neutral after 25 years of being in operation. The excess energy created by the building will provide enough carbon credits in 25 years to pay back the carbon used during construction.

Chris Jagger, the University of Nottingham’s chief estates and facilities officer, said: “We have commissioned the very best expertise in the project management and design team consultants and we are delighted at the appointment of Morgan Sindall as contractors to enable us to proceed with the construction and delivery of this project.”

The creation of this new lab shows both the university's and the contractor's ambition to reduce the impact that construction can have on the environment. By creating a building that is both energy efficient and a real asset to the institute this is seen as a big plus and one that could also attract more students to study in Nottingham.
