Bromsgrove District Council has defended its decision to keep a lynch gate closed following a refurbishment.
The access barrier at the area's New Cemetery was recently renovated following complaints from residents, who described the dilapidated gates as being an "eyesore" for the area.
However, after work was completed the council has taken the decision not to open the gates due to fears over road safety. Members of the local authority said that while they were "proud" that the gate has been fully restored it was not practical for it to be opened and used on a regular basis.
A spokesperson for the council told the Bromsgrove Advertiser: "Those familiar with the area will know that for many years, Bromsgrove Cemetery has been accessible by its three other gates. We're proud to restore this beautiful medieval landmark [lynch gate] but it is not suited to practical everyday use."
Campaigners said they were "disappointed" by the decision to not use the gate as an entrance and exit.
