Skanska secures Papworth Hospital contract

Skanska secures Papworth Hospital contract
Skanska has been selected to lead a consortium to building the new Papworth Hospital at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The company has been tasked with designing, building and maintaining the new development when it moves to its new location. The decision came after the first images of the facility were unveiled and work is expected to begin in autumn 2014. Skanska managed to beat off a number of top name competitors, including Bouygues, to secure preferred bidder status of the £165 million private finance initiative (PFI) hospital scheme.

Papworth Hospital will be a purpose-built facility complete with 310 beds and single room accommodation. There will be a research and education institute available to train the next generation of medical staff. However, there is still the issue of gaining approval from the Department of Health and the Treasury which hold the key to granting the PFI deal.

Officials are planning to have the development ready by the beginning of 2017, should everything go to plan in the interim.

Professor Patrick Maxwell, regius professor of physic and executive director of Cambridge University Health Partners, said: “I am delighted that the project to relocate Papworth Hospital to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus is moving forwards. The Biomedical Campus is part of the largest biotech cluster outside the United States.

Ken Brewer, project director, explained that the decision to choose Skanska over Bouygues was a difficult one and took a "very robust" process to come to a conclusion. He commended the fact that both submitted bid were "very comprehensive" but believed that Skanska was the company that it would be take the project forward.

The creation the new Papworth Hospital has been described as an "important milestone" for the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and will form a key part in its development over the coming years. It is also hoped that it could attract more budding health professionals to the industry.
