Stoke-on-Trent residents have angrily reacted to the council's decision to change the way security fencing is repaired.
The new ruling means that the authority will only carry out work on damaged fencing or replace missing bars on council houses in certain circumstances. Members have stated that the fence must be dangerous and adjoin a footpath or other community area to qualify for maintenance.
Residents have been outraged by this decision, stating that it could pose a higher risk to elderly people and young children. They believe that some older inhabitants are unable to carry out the work themselves.
Bentilee Residents' Association chairman Alan Joinson, told The Sentinel: "Apart from anything else, broken fences are an eyesore. And if you've got great big gaping holes in them you're allowing vermin into your home, like rats, cats and dogs."
A number of security gates are also under threat within the region as the council says there is a lack of funds to maintain them.
