The danger of broken security fencing
has been highlighted after two guard dogs escaped through panels at a scrapyard in Manchester and had to be rescued from a frozen canal.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the Rottweilers broke onto the Rochdale Canal, off the A62 Oldham Road in Failsworth.
Passers-by close to a bridge running over the canal spotted the dogs and called the fire service with crews from Hollins and Chadderton being dispatched to help.
Inaccurate reports initially suggested a man had ventured onto the canal to rescue the dogs, which were coaxed back, unharmed.
A spokesperson for the fire service told the newspaper the dogs had escape through broken security fencing
Earlier this year, a tiger at a zoo in Miami, Florida, US, vaulted a 12ft fence into a crowd of visitors.
The unusual incident happened because the animal had been goaded by a passing baboon that had escaped from its cage. The primate was hopping around on visitors' heads, taunting the tiger.
