The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has advised homeowners to bolster security as the nights get longer, which may include considering steel gates and metal railings for their property.

The latest British Crime Survey, published yesterday (October 24th), showed a 14 per cent increase in domestic burglary levels between 2010 and 2011.

These figures have prompted the NAEA to recommend homeowners review their outdoor lighting situation, fit timers to indoor lighting and consider joining or setting up a local Neighbourhood Watch group.

"This isn't about living in fear, but about adopting a practical, commonsense approach to safety," said Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the NAEA.

"Taking simple steps when you get the keys to your new home can help to protect both people and property."

Recently, Bedfordshire Police advised people to make their home look and feel occupied at all times to deter burglars operating over the festive period.
