Play area fencing at one Chilton playground may not be enough to keep vandals out when staff are not on duty, the local council has suggested.

As a result, the Miners' Welfare Recreation Ground will be closed at weekends throughout the winter due to staff shortages, but shall remain open from 09:00-16:00 GMT on weekdays.

The closure has already taken effect and will continue until April 27th.

Chilton Town Council clerk Paul Grey told the Northern Echo: "It's down to money and we don't have anyone going into the park in the winter to justify paying someone to be there."

He revealed that the play area had already been subjected to various attempts at vandalism and the problem cannot be kept at bay unless someone is on the scene.

The play area at the Miners' Welfare Recreation Ground is suitable for children under the age of five and was constructed when the Sedgefield Borough Council committed to spending £700,000 on play sites in 2005.
