Security fencing installation and other measures to protect the London 2012 Games will still continue despite the terrorism threat level being reduced.

Sports and Olympics minister Hugh Robertson announced that the terror threat to the UK has been lowered to substantial from severe.

However, he said that the country is still on full alert and all precautions will be taken to ensure that the Games remain a safe event.

Mr Robertson is quoted by Reuters as telling the British Olympic Association that he is happy to reveal the lowering of the terrorist threat.

"All our security planning is done on the assumption that the threat level will be severe, and that will not change," he explained.

"Clearly it's good for us, I'm delighted that the threat level is less than that but we carry on ... it's an old military thing, you plan for the worst case scenario."

Symantec revealed earlier this month that the Olympics will also be a target for cyber criminals.
