The British Crime Reduction Centre (BCRC) has warned small businesses of the risks of self-installation of security systems, such as security fencing.

The BCRC, which helps small to medium enterprises tackle crime by providing advice, guidance, signposting and support to all businesses, said that the purchase of security systems could be an extremely difficult task.

Some of the challenges facing businesses were a lack of professional knowledge and experience with general security mechanisms, which meant either a lack of protection or inadequate systems.

Adrian Platts, spokesman for the BCRC, said: "There are many self-installation packages that can be bought, although these are often very basic and don’t always have the reliability of a professionally installed business grade system. It can also be a costly and wasteful exercise.”

The BCRC is funded by Yorkshire Forward the Regional Development Agency, which is responsible for improving the Yorkshire and Humber economy.
