Jacksons Fencing recently ran a competition offering UK schools the chance to win £3,000 worth of fencing for their school. The lucky winners have recently been selected after wowing the judges with a poem explaining why their school was desperately in need of new fencing.
The pupils at Brownlow Primary School in Leicestershire sent Jacksons a rhyming story explaining that their school currently has 200 metres of 90-year-old fencing in need of replacing. You can read their entry below:
‘We’ve been rated “Good” by Ofsted, of which we’re very proud.
But when you visit us, our railings cry out loud.
After 90 years of service, they’ve seen much better days.
We’d love to replace them all, but we can’t afford to pay.
It’s more than a lick of paint they need,
And even if we all worked at top speed,
With nearly 200 meters to complete,
The thought leaves us feeling beat.
We’re now aiming for “Outstanding” and what better place to start,
Than the perimeter of the school, past which hundreds walk and park?
Our entry now comes to you, and is written from the heart,
Please choose us for this fantastic prize, and help us make a start!’
Brownlow Primary School in Melton Mowbray has nearly 600 pupils and is part of the Mowbray Education Trust made up of five (soon to be six) schools in the Borough of Melton.
The primary school opened in 1952, with 2017 marking its 65th anniversary, although it didn’t move to its current site until 1965. Previously, the building was home to the ‘Melton Mowbray Modern School for Boys’ dating back to 1928, and as such many generations of Meltonians have fond memories of the school and it has an excellent reputation in the area.
Following an inspection earlier this year, the school once again achieved a ‘Good’ rating OFSTED. The inspector praised the school and said: ‘Teachers [at Brownlow] have high expectations and plan interesting learning activities that engage pupils in their work. The pupils I spoke with were articulate, confident and polite. They told me that they enjoy all their lessons because teachers make them fun.’
