As well as using security fencing and steel gates, a TV personality has revealed some of the other measures people can taker to secure their homes.
In the Daily Mail, Beat the Burglar presenter Michael Fraser said home security can be further improved with the use of a webcam, which can be monitored remotely via a smartphone or PC.
The expert also recommends fixing broken sliding gates immediately, as any outward signs of neglect tend to be taken as a sign by burglars that the occupier does not take security seriously.
"Keep windows and doors shut and locked, even when you are at home," added Mr Fraser in the article.
"We're just as vulnerable and at risk as an opportunist thief will burgle your property even when someone is inside."
According to a recent survey by security company Friedland, four out of five ex-burglars believe thieves are using social media to find out whether someone is home.
