A ribbon-cutting ceremony has taken place to unveil new play area fencing and other playground equipment in Colchester after it was unveiled earlier this week.

Father Simon Helvadjian and other local residents on the Greenstead estate worked together to turn a disused site into a new play area, including plenty of fundraising.

Gazette-news.co.uk reports that after a letter was written to Colchester Council, and funding was put together from Colchester Borough Homes and Essex County Council, construction work began.

Mr Helvadjian told the news provider that the end product provides a safe place for youngsters to enjoy themselves.

"Parents can let their children play in a safe area and not worry about them crossing busy roads," he explained.

"There is a very good sense of community spirit and we are delighted we have been able to make this happen."

Last month, Dean Windass unveiled new play area fencing near Thirsk, in addition to a 20-metre zip wire and BMX track.
