A historic set of security fencing has been stolen from a cemetery in Falkirk, prompting calls for the public to stay alert and stop any more thefts.

Thieves are believed to have targeted the Camelon graveyard in four separate trips to steel the wrought iron fence, which has stood in place for more than a century, the Falkirk Herald reports.

They are believed to have stolen from the security fencing because of its scrap metal value, and the incident has raised calls for security patrols around the cemetery area.

"It is truly disappointing to see that vandalism can take place at the cemetery and we would urge anyone with any knowledge to get in touch with the police as soon as possible," Colin Cunningham of Falkirk Council told the newspaper.

According to British Transport Police, metal theft has now hit an all-time high around the country and officers are planning to target scrap dealers in a bid to catch criminals.
