Security fencing would help protect newts from festival-goers

Security fencing would help protect newts from festival-goers
Security fencing could be erected around a festival being planned near a pond that is home to protected great crest newts.

Some 10,000 people are expected to attend the Hudbu Festival, which is being held at the Wirral Rugby Club, reported the Liverpool Daily Post.

The rugby club’s carpark is adjacent to one of the ponds at Thornton Common.

Cheshire Wildlife Trust (CWT) said that in the last two years the great crested newts had colonised the largest pond.

The newspaper reported that the CWT had asked for strict conditions to be applied to avoid any damage to the site of biological importance (SBI).

Guards would be posted along the security fencing to ensure that no damage was done to the habitat that has become so vital to the newts.

Jai Byron, the festival organiser, said that they were doing everything to make the event "socially responsible", including hiring specialists to deal with noise, extra-security and traffic calming measures.

Last month, security fencing was installed on the banks of the River Derwent in an effort to protect water quality and preserve the future of wildlife.
