Vale councillor defends bespoke bollards

Vale councillor defends bespoke bollards
A Vale councillor has defended spending £30,000 of regeneration money on bespoke security bollards.

The Barry and District News reported that councillor Rhodri Traherne believes that the barriers are important to making the town of Barry a success. Mr Traherne has come under criticism from fellow members of council with councillor Richard Bertin branding the bollards a "waste of money".

Mr Traherne, the cabinet member for economic development and regeneration and Barry regeneration area board member, told councillors that each bollard on Thompson Street would cost £1,200 whereas a standard bollard would cost £200.

He told the source: "My personal view is that the bollards are excellent value for money. They have made a real impact. A number of people have said to me how pleased they are with the work. If we are to establish ourselves alongside Cardiff and Bristol and other successful cities public art is an important part."

According to bollard enthusiast John Kennedy the best bollard can be found Westminster.
