Plans to erect security fencing along part of Dungeness Beach have concerned local anglers, who say it could block part of the most important cod fishing spot in the country.
EDF Energ and the Environment Agency want to move thousands of tons of shingle on the beach to protect the nearby power station from erosion, which would require a small area to be fenced off, BBC News reports.
However, local anglers say the security fencing will close off a spot that is used by tens of thousands of fishermen every year, putting a serious dent in the winter economy.
"There will always be access to the rest of the beach and when we are not working that fencing will be gone and people will have full access to the beach," Ian Nunn, South Kent asset manager for the Environment Agency, told the news provider.
It follows news that Woburn Safari Park in Bedfordshire is hoping to erect three-metre security fencing in its elephant enclosure, according to Bedfordshire on Sunday.
