The creation of the Crossrail development is continuing at a pace after Network Rail announced that Balfour Beatty Rail has been awarded the latest contract.

Officials stated that the company will be given the task of upgrading a 12-mile section of the Western Main Line between West Drayton and Maidenhead enabling the Crossrail services to run. Network Rail's Crossrail team stated that work is due to begin in summer 2013 with a completion date being earmarked for summer 2017 which will put it inline with the rest of the development.

Once finished, it will provide commuters with another option in which to travel across London potentially reducing the amount of congestion on public transport.

Balfour Beatty Rail will be given the job of completing the 'west outer' track infrastructure contract laid out by Crossrail which includes a host of specific aspects.

The company will provide detailed design, installation and commissioning of new upgraded tracks as well carrying out track lowering under a number of bridges to ensure that clearance is made available for overhead lines that will be needed for the new electric trains. There will be work carried out to create a new stabling sidings area for Crossrail trains at Maidenhead.

Jorge Mendonça, Network Rail's Crossrail programme director, said: "Network Rail is undertaking a major upgrade of the existing rail network for Crossrail, including a significant programme of track renewals as well as station improvements. Crossrail will transform public transport, making it quicker and easier for people to get to destinations across London and the south east."

The Crossrail network construction process is in full swing with a number of stations, namely Custom House, in the creation phase while tunnelling in the south-east of London has also started. It is designed at improving links across the city and will not only look at developing a new railway service but also aid in the regeneration of many of the areas that it will pass through once completed.
