Barrhead council believes that the new initiative to restore the town's Cowan Park is a perfect opportunity to paint the "miles of rusty railings".

The century-old park is to undergo a revamp as the Friends of Cowan Park (FoCP) plan to bring the town's favourite recreation area back to life. Barrhead News reported that councillor Eddie Phillips has been campaigning to have the metal railings re-dusted and repainted but believes it is a massive job to take on.

However, he thinks that with the help of FoCP it could be a distinct possibility and give the residents of Barrhead a park they can truly be proud of, complete with shiny new railings.

Mr Phillips told the source: "Now that we have FoCP we can get the materials, clothing and people on Community Payback Orders (CPO) to do the work. It benefits the CPO people by giving them a physical task to do, keeps them out of mischief and who knows they might even get some satisfaction out of it."

Elsewhere, the Coventry Telegraph reported that work has begun on a new play park in the city's Gosford Park following a lengthy campaign from the area's residents.
