Play area fencing and other equipment at a playground in Berrow have been awarded a prize by the Somerset Playing Fields Association.

The £50,000 facilities on Berrow Green were named as the best in the county at the organisation's AGM this week, the second time they have won the accolade.

A £15,000 grant from Viridor Credits Environmental Company, National Lottery money and funding from several local councils helped the play area open last year, reports burnham-on-sea.com.

BBC sports presenter Geoff Twentyman, who presented the award to Berrow Parish Council, told the news provider of the importance the facilities have for the local community.

"It's great to see the pride that is taken in maintaining and running play areas such as the one at Berrow," he explained.

"They are crucial in children's development. Anything that gets children away from computers and games consoles, and out into the fresh air, is wonderful."

Barrington could also see new play area fencing in the near future after receiving total funding of £100,000 from various organisations and charities.
