Plans for a major redevelopment project at Brighton and Hove City College are back on after being shelved for four years.
The educational institute has unveiled proposals for a £73 million expansion that have been put back on track after financial backers stepped into to ensure that the plans could potentially come to fruition in the future. The vision of the new-look college has been put forward for the public to see with a formal-planning application being put before Brighton and Hove City Council by Christmas with the aim of starting construction in autumn 2013.
Officials have said that, if approved, the construction process will take four to five years to complete providing students and staff alike with a college with a state-of-the-art structure. The development is aimed to maximise the potential of the facility with the first phase seeing the demolition of the Pelham Tower in order to make way for a student-accommodation building. This structure will have the capacity for 500 flats after new college premises are built in the adjacent car park.
These plans were originally put to the council when the initial proposals were created but these had to be shelved when the banks that were funding the project pulled out of the deal. However, thanks to the involvement of new backers the college is confident these plans will go ahead and create an improved working environment for everyone attending the university.
Lynn Thackway, the principal of City College Brighton and Hove, said: "Our buildings are not fit for purpose. Our aim is to be an outstanding and responsive college at the heart of learning in Brighton and Hove with a commitment to continuous quality improvement. This means delivering vocational and professional learning, skills and apprenticeship opportunities in accommodation that is fit for purpose."
The institute has undergone a host of improvements over the past ten years with £8.2 million being invested into key new buildings such as a Library Resource Centre, Refectory and Training Restaurant, The Gallery designed to boost the current facilities it offers to students.
