The University of Brighton is set to boost its offering to current and future students with the construction of new halls of residence.
Officials stated that the £8.5 million project will form part of the £33 million Varley Park development programme, which aims to significantly boost the facilities offered by the south-east university.
ISG has been named as the contractor to take on the construction of the accommodation project, which will encompass 147 rooms and replace two former facilities that have been used in the past. The new site will be situated on a brownfield area at the edge of the South Downs which the university acquired recently.
The firm noted that it will take on the second phase of the overall plan for the institute, which will involve the demolition of 1960s student accommodation that was originally used by the university. These will be replaced by three BREEAM excellent rated structures that will form a key part of the development of Brighton's university in the coming years as it looks to compete with some of the larger institutes in London and farther afield.
Ian Gifford, ISG's managing director for the south-east, said: "The scale and speed of the development and the live environment setting provides a range of challenges and we are utilising innovative technology, including BIM software to model the buildings and maximise base build efficiencies.
"Increasingly, quality student accommodation on campus is business critical for universities and this project will demonstrate the high standards that can be achieved."
Brighton has been a hive of activity regarding its educational facilities of late with the city's college announcing that it was back on track with its expansion plans. The original proposals for the £73 million regeneration project had been put on hold due to the financial backers withdrawing support for the development, however after new benefactors stepped in the work is now due to be completed for autumn 2013.
The University of Brighton accommodation project is also due to be completed in September 2013 in time for the new academic year.
