Construction sites need to adopt security measures such as steel gates to help prevent their machinery from being stolen, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has said.
When machinery is taken, it can often be used for illegal means, the group revealed, with two recent high-profile incidents of ATMs being ripped out of walls with diggers demonstrating just that.
The BSIA has enlisted the help of its Cash and Valuables in Transit (CVIT) division to help demonstrate the measures that can be taken to safeguard machinery.
It emphasises that there are considerable costs associated with stolen machinery, such as repair bills for any buildings that might be damaged.
Ashley Bailey, chairman of the BSIA's CVIT section, commented: "Basic precautions such as ensuring that gates are closed … could also go a long way towards reducing the incidence of such crimes."
He also warned against leaving keys in the ignition of vehicles, as this will give thieves an easy ride.
