Cardiff could experience one of the biggest expansions in the past 50 years if the council approves plans.

The local authority will vote on whether or not the city will rapidly grow over the next 15 years, and if approved there could be a further 45,000 homes built within the Welsh capital by 2026. It will see the population of Cardiff swell to over 400,000 with areas such as Pentrebane and Pontprennau being earmarked as the main parts of the city which will see the most growth. It will also mean that the amount of houses in Cardiff will increase by 26 per cent from 146,000 to 184,000 but there has been some concern around the proposals.

Officials have pointed out that the rapid expansion would have a significant impact on journey times of public transport. Those behind the Local Development Plan (LDP) have been warned that due to the increased traffic that will be in and around the city, the average commuter could spend 40 per cent longer on a bus or in their car while trying to get into work. However, the blueprint for the plans has included measures which will aim to improve this.

Ralph Cook, deputy leader of Cardiff Council, said: "Each of the local authorities have got their own development plans and in them are their predicted or aspired to number of properties they are going to build. So they are taking on some of the burden but the truth is the developers and people themselves want to live and work in Cardiff."

The largest single development will take place in a new suburb west of Pentrebane which has been highlighted for the creation of 7,500 homes. Developers have also noted that it will provide a major boost to the city's employment levels with around 40,000 jobs due to be created over the course of the project, marking a 20 per cent increase.

Cardiff is undergoing a number of significant changes as well as the proposed expansion with the city's bay area, in the midst of major redevelopment after plans were originally stalled in 2008.
