As the Chelsea FC squad prepare themselves for Saturday's (May 5th) FA Cup Final against Liverpool, the club has announced that it has launched a bid to buy the land that holds the Battersea Power Station.
Club officials have highlighted the site as the proposed new home of a 60,000-seater stadium as expansion on their current Stamford Bridge ground has been ruled out. The club announced in March that increasing the capacity of its current home, which they have been playing at since 1905, made no economical sense and that a new home is badly needed.
The Premiership side is one of ten parties that are involved in the bidding for the highly sought after site and Chelsea have admitted in a club statement that there is "no certainty" that it will be successful in its bid.
Chelsea's board has been mulling over a move away from Stamford Bridge to a much larger, state-of-the-art ground to compete with the revenues of the other major clubs in world football. The current stadium only holds 42,000, compared to Manchester United's Old Trafford which has a capacity of 76,000, meaning the club is lagging behind the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Sunderland in terms of size, culminating in reduced revenue.
However, if the bid is accepted Chelsea could ply their trade in the country's joint-third biggest stadium, with Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, with the planned stadium featuring a 15,000-seater single tier south stand.
Stamford Bridge is owned by the supporter's group Chelsea Pitch Owner's (CPO) who acquired the ground in 1997 and the organisation rejected the club's bid to buy the stadium from it in October last year. The CPO claimed that the board had not shown enough effort to remain at Stamford Bridge but this latest Battersea development is not a definitive decision to take the club away from home of over 100 years, according to the board.
The statement added: "We must also stress that making an offer for the Battersea Power Station site does not mean the club has made a definitive decision to leave Stamford Bridge."
