A community organisation in Northampton has embarked on a project to paint security fencing surrounding a local park.

Members of the Friends of Abington Park group came together to paint and restore the perimeter fence along Abington Park Crescent in an effort to improve the area's appearance, reports the Northampton Chronicle and Echo.

The volunteers were joined by the Abington Park's new park ranger Vikkie Maloney and Rebecca Harding, the councillor for Northamptonshire County.

It is hoped that the repairs to provide a greater level of security for local residents that use the park and improve the general look of the park.

Brian Stevens, the chairman of Friends of Abington Park, told the Northampton Chronicle: "It makes a great difference when the Victorian fencing is rubbed down and repainted and many passers-by stop and admire the improvement that the Friends have made."

Further work needs to be carried out on other broken sections of the security fencing and bent metal railings. The work is expected to cost thousands of pounds.
